Buckle, the latest
creation by Innermost Creative Director Tina Leung, is
a marriage of lighting and sculpture, consisting of differently
sized rings cut from stainless steel sheets suspended and
arranged in a spherical form.
Natural light and light from the point of illumination
merge and bounce between the rings and reflecting the environment
around them creating illusions of movement within the piece.
Steve Jones, Innermost Director comments: "Tina
Leung has done numerous projects for Innermost but I think
this is the most mature and the most beautiful to date;
it's the first one where at many times during its experimental
phase I myself thought it might not succeed. I was wrong
and I am happy to be so."
Technically the piece impresses because of its deceptive
simplicity that hides the complex engineering that has
gone into it. Super slim stainless steel tensile wires
dart through surfaces hidden by tiny high strength nylon
injection mouldings with the kind of precision that would
make a watchmaker proud. The back of the steel is deliberately
coloured matt white to add to the sense of lightness; it
almost appears to be floating when in fact the piece weighs
20kg.
